The Faculty Council is the representative advisory body for staff and students of the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences. The Faculty Council is the body that the board consults with regard to Faculty management and structure.

Meeting subjects

On the agenda of the Faculty Council meetings are subjects dealt with every year, such as the Faculty budget and the adoption of the Teaching and Examination Regulations. Current affairs coming to the fore in an academic year are also dealt with. The nine annual meetings of the Faculty Council are open to the public.

Powers of the Faculty Council

The Faculty Council has the right to prior consultation and the right of consent. The powers and working method of the Faculty Council are set out in the Faculty regulations (in Dutch), and in the Regulations of order, which are based on the Dutch Higher Education and Research Act (Wet op het Hoger onderwijs en Wetenschappelijk onderzoek, WHW).

Size and delegations

The Faculty Council comprises fourteen members, seven student members and seven personnel members. The size is regulated by law and depends on the size of the faculty. The Faculty Council has two delegations, a staff delegation and a student delegation. These delegations meet separately with the Faculty Board to discuss those matters with regard to which the delegation in question has special powers.

Powers of the delegations

The members of the personnel delegation have the right to be consulted on matters such as terms of employment, general personnel policy and organisational affairs at Faculty level. The members of the student delegation have the right to be consulted on student policy and student reimbursements.

Chair

The Faculty Council can elect a chair from among its members but can also choose to select an independent chair. The Social and Behavioural Sciences Faculty Council appoints an independent chair. This chair can be reappointed.  Prof. dr. Toon Taris is since 2022 the independent chair of the Faculty Council.

Elections

Elections take place every spring. All members of staff may stand for election and all have the right to vote. The organisation of the student elections is supported by Inspraak and any other potential student groups. The Faculty Council sees to it that the elections will be carried out correctly.
